Our client's brief was to expand their existing deck, to create a welcoming space for outdoor living and dining. The original deck was too narrow to be functional, offering limited usability and no practical room for comfortable seating - prompting a transformation into a more spacious and inviting area perfect for entertaining.
Before
The deck provides sweeping views across Auckland Harbour and the surrounding gulf islands. A new glass balustrade, free of horizontal and vertical rails, preserves a clear, uninterrupted outlook.
Planning regulations, circulation around the deck, privacy from the road, and access to the pool were all carefully considered and resolved during the design process.
Positioned on a clifftop, structural engineering and geotechnical expertise played a key role in the project. The design features a striking cantilever system, where circular hollow section steel struts elegantly support projecting steel beams. To endure the demanding coastal environment, a high-performance corrosion protection system was specified, ensuring long-term durability and resilience.
The client is delighted with the outcome, which successfully expands the outdoor living area while maintaining uninterrupted views. The design also thoughtfully integrates pool access, privacy, and all necessary engineering requirements.
