Located in Albany, Fairview House is a large residence on a fairly steep, 612m2 South facing site, in a residential subdivision. Our client's brief was to design a new family home, to accommodate multi-generational family living.
Restricted by the size, shape and orientation of the site, the design was developed over three storeys. The main living areas are placed centrally, around an internal courtyard, with large glazed doors and windows to the North, bringing natural light and access to the private outdoor living area.
Level 1 accommodates a large double garage, storage, a bedroom, toilet and shower, and a laundry with external access. Stairs take you up to the main living and entry, level 2. This level contains the main living room with fireplace, and open plan dining, kitchen with scullery, family room and internal courtyard. Also, a large double bedroom, bathroom, and guest toilet.





In contrast to the horizontal form of the roofs, the internal stair to level 3, is expressed externally with a tall vertical bay window. This level houses the master bedroom, with walk-in wardrobe and ensuite, two further bedrooms, a bathroom and storage.
The chosen materials reflect the local building materials of the area, with restrained elegant facades and simple robust detailing. The house is built in brick masonry on the ground level and timber weatherboard cladding above. Materials were chosen for long life, low maintenance and high quality. The design included the use of solar hot water heating, and a heat pump ventilation system.
