Our client's brief was to rebuild and extend an existing childcare centre, to accommodate 65 children. The childcare centre comprises two buildings. 165 Main Highway, was altered and refurbished in 2014. 163 Main Highway, was renovated and extended, including a new second storey, in 2018. The two buildings form part of a group of five English Cottage Style houses built in the 1920's. Historically important, they are situated at the entrance to the Ellerslie village, on Main Highway.
As a zoning requirement, the building form had to suit the established character of the area. The main gable roof forms and proportions needed to be retained. The new second storey, was positioned towards the rear of the building, away from the street frontage. This reduces it's visibility and dominance from the street, enabling the original character to be retained.
